SCOTTISH SENIORS MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - Miller marches on at Kinross

David J. Miller (Kilmarnock Barassie) - pictured right - the beaten finalist 12 months ago, is through to the quarter finals of the 2010 Scottish Seniors Matchplay Championship, being played at Kinross this week.

With the opening round of matchplay which followed strokeplay qualifying being delayed due to rain, first round matches did not begin until Thursday.

The defending champion George Paterson (Northern), who beat Miller in the final at Newmacher last year, lost out in the first round.

Whilst Miller progressed from the first round with a 2&1 win over local member Ian Campbell, the other Ayrshire player in the matchplay stages, Keith Howie (West Kilbride), bowed out with a 2&1 defeat by Gordon McDonald (Callander).

Results of the first round matches on Thursday were :-

Sandy Pirie (Hazlehead) beat Jim Paton (Kirkintilloch) by 2 and 1

John Johnston (Lanark) beat George Payne (Prestbury) by 5 and 4

John McDonald (Cowglen) beat Jalil Aman (Grangemouth) by 4 and 3

Ian Taylor (Royal Burgess) beat Alistair Fiddes (Deeside) by 2 and 1

Iain Stewart (The Curragh) beat Richard T Gray (Cowglen) by 5 and 4

Stephen Ellis (Innellan) beat Les Fowler (Royal Aberdeen) by 5 and 4

James T Johnson (Northumberland) walkover against John Fraser (Royal Burgess) scratched

Tony Stafford (Glenealges) beat Allan Cameron (Gourock) by 7 and 6

Scott MacDonald (Dunfermline) beat David A Millar at th 20th

Andrew Campbell (Kinross) beat Bill Erksine (Kilsyth Lennox) by 1 hole

In the second round matches, Miller progressed to the last eight with a 3&2 win over another local member, Andrew Campbell.
