AYRSHIRE MEN'S STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - First area championship win for Colin Goudie

Colin Goudie (Ayr Belleisle) won his first Ayrshire area championship title on Sunday the 30th of April 2023 at Western Gailes Golf Club, when he took the 2023 Ayrshire Men's Strokeplay Championship title by a single shot.

In the calm but mildly wet conditions in the morning, the best scores from the capacity field were posted by Aidan Long (Ayr Belleisle) and Steven Stamper (Girvan) who both shot 70, one ahead of reigning Ayrshire Champion of Champions trophy title holder Blair Morton (Royal Troon) and two better than Scottish senior internationalist  Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) and Graeme Gimson (Prestwick St Cuthbert.

The eventual winner was five shots adrift after the morning round with his score of 75.

In the afternoon the weather and conditions brightened for the players which was reflected in the scoring.

Host club member Craig Chalmers set the early lead with a total of 144, after following his opening round of 73 with a 71 in the afternoon, to ultimately secure fourth place overall in the event.

The leading score was lowered by one a short time later when  Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) followed his morning 72 with an afternoon round of 71 to lead the field. but within a few minutes Colin Goudie, a + 3 handicapped former county player when he resided in England and who took up golf again once he had moved to Ayrshire,  posted a superb afternoon round of 67, the best of the day by several shots, to set a 36 hole target of 142, which ultimately gave him the county title .
