WEST OF SCOTLAND INTER COUNTY LEAGUES - Five star display from John Haggarty, and ace performance from Harvey MacDonald as Ayrshire conclude West of Scotland matches against Dumbartonshire

John Haggarty (Loudoun) produced a five star display for the Ayrshire A team on Sunday the 17th of October, at Prestwick St Nicholas against Dumbartonshire, when he completed 5 wins from five in the 2021 West of Scotland league matches, as Ayrshire won their final match of the series by 5 – 3.

Haggarty achieved the feat with a 6 & 5 win in his tie, to become the first Ayrshire player to win five from five in the series of matches since Steven Wallace did so in Ayrshire’s title winning year in 2015.

Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) halved with Iain McCalman

Adam Sweeney (Prestwick St Cuthbert) halved with Kieran Quinn

Scott Brown (Prestwick St Cuthbert) beat Peter Haggarty by 3&2

Barry O’Rourke (Loudoun) beat Craig Bissett by 6&4

Blair Morton (Royal Troon) halved with Greg Halkett

Steven Stamper (Turnberry) lost to Sammy Clingan by 3&2

John Haggarty (Loudoun) beat Eamon McIlroy by 6&5

The final match win saw Ayrshire finish in third place in the table, behind Lanarkshire, who won their final home match by 6.5 – 1.5 against Stirlingshire, and the 2021 title winner Renfrewshire, who retained the trophy following a final day home win by 7 – 1 over Glasgow.

One match, between Dumbartonshire and Glasgow, remains outstanding.

Though Ayrshire narrowly lost their final match in the West of Scotland Youths league, away to Dumbartonshire at Douglas Park, by 4.5 – 3.5, Harvey MacDonald (Ayr Belleisle) produced an ace performance, holing his tee shot at the par three third hole on the way to a single hole victory in his tie.

Max Barclay (Ayr Belleisle) halved with Stewart Boyd (Hayston)

Calum Cameron (Kilmarnock Barassie) lost to Jack Clark (Dullatur) by 1 hole

Stewart Russell (Royal Troon) lost to Neil Stewart (Clober) by 2&1

Jack Thomas (Irvine) beat David Hood (Cardross) by 2&1

The final day win saw Dumbartonshire retain the West of Scotland Youths League title, ahead of Lanarkshire, who finished the campaign with a 5 – 3 win away to Stirlingshire, and Renfrewshire, who had a 6.5 – 1.5 away win against Glasgow on the final weekend.

The fixture between Glasgow and Stirlingshire is still outstanding, with the present positions in the Youths league being :-

The Youths league win gave Dumbartonshire a ‘double’ in 2021, after their Under 18 team edged out Ayrshire in the chase for the Wishart Trophy and West of Scotland Under 18 League title during the summer.
