SCOTTISH GOLFERS' ALLIANCE CHAMPIONSHIP - One - two for Ayrshire at irvine

The Scottish Golfers' Alliance Championship took place at Irvine Golf Club from 4th to 6th october with Ayrshire players enjoying success in the amateur scratch section of the event.

Whilst Chris Currie (Caldwell) overtook the six shot lead of John Henry (Clydebank and District) in the final round to take the professional prize with a 218 total, Ayrshire county player Jim Johnston (Ayr Belleisle) finished as the leading amateur on 224, carding rounds of 71, 73 and 80 to win the Clydesdale Bank Quaich by a single shot from Ayrshire county team mate Malcolm Pennycott (Whiting Bay) who recorded rounds of 75, 78 & 72.

Charlie Macneal (Prestwick) featured in the prizes as joint third in the handicap event, whilst Macneal and Johnston  provided two of the six counting scores that gave the West Alliance the Mountbatten Cup for the team event.
