Malcolm Pennycott (Royal Burgess) lost out in the quarter finals of the Scottish Mens Amateur Championship at Royal Aberdeen on Friday morning, 29th July.
Things looked good early on for the Ayrshire county player, who is also a member of Whiting Bay, when he went three up on his opponent George Duncan (Windyhill) after four holes in their quarter final clash. Duncan reduced the deficit with a birdie theee at the fifth and the two hole advantage to Pennycott remained to the turn.
Pennycott went three up again with a birdie four at the twelfth and despite three successive bogeys from the thirteenth by Pennycott, Duncan was only able to reduce the deficit to two holes with three to play.
Another bogey from Pennycott at the par four sixteenth saw Duncan reduce Pennycott's lead to a single hole and a birdie two at the penultimate hole allowed Duncan to level the match for the first time since the players stood on the first tee.
Malcolm Pennycott's mysery was complete when he finished with another bogey, his fifth in the closing six holes, and Duncan took the opportunity with a closing par four to win the tie by one hole.
Despite the quarter final defeat, Malcolm Pennycott can be justifiably proud of his performance throughout the week, where he did his clubs and county proud.
George Duncan went on to win his semi final in the afternoon at the 20th hole and will play Andrew Burgess (Nairn) in Saturday's 36 hole final.
