AYRSHIRE BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP - Craig McKenzie takes title to Troon Welbeck

2015 Ayrshire Boys Champion Craig McKenzie
With Ayrshire Golf Association President James McMurdo
Craig McKenzie (Troon Welbeck) is the 2015 Ayrshire Boys Champion following a four stroke victory in the championship, sponsored for the first time this year by sports scholarship consultants United Sports USA, which was played at West Kilbride GC on Thursday 6th August.

The Ayrshire county player, who turned 18 five weeks ago, led from start to finish to record his first county title win.

The championship course proved a stern test for competitors with a stiff breeze off the see making conditions testing throughout the day, which saw the CSS in both rounds increase by one to 72..

McKenzie opened with a four over par 75 in the first round, giving him a single shot lead over Charlie Cameron (Ayr Belleisle) and Euan Ferguson (Turnberry), with defending champion Jack Thomas (Irvine) a shot further back on 77.

In the second round McKenzie went one shot better, returning a 74 for a two round winning total of 149.

The 2014 winner Jack Thomas (Irvine) put up a spirited defence of his title, taking the runners up spot on 153, following a second round of 76. Whilst Sean Cook (Kilmarnock Barassie) added a 76 to his opening 78 for a 154 total and third place in the event.

Robbie Muir (Kilmarnock Barassie) took fourth place in the scratch event on 156, whilst Blair Fleming took the fifth scratch prize on 158, following an equal best of the day second round of 74.

The top nett prize was won by John Lomas (Ayr Belleisle on 139, with Charlie Cameron (Ayr Belleisle) second on 146, by virtue of the best second round, and Craig McDonald (West Kilbride) in third place also with 146.

At the conclusion of play, prizes were awarded to the successful competitors by Ayrshire Golf Association President James McMurdo.
