THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - Extra hole agony for McDonald at Carnoustie

Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) suffered the agony of a nineteenth hole exit in the semi final of The Amateur Championship at Carnoustie on Friday afternoon, losing out to Romaine Languasque of France in his bid to reach the final for the first time.

With Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) having defeated the other French semi finalist Alexandre Daydou by 4 & 2, there were high hopes for an all Scottish final but these were dashed late in McDonald’s match.

Par figures over the opening five holes saw McDonald lead by one hole after his opponent bogeyed the fourth, but the sixth hole, which had not been a good one for McDonand all week, again yielded a bogey six and a lost hole for the Scot.

A bogey five at the seventh saw McDonald go behind for the first time in the match but he hit straight back at the next hole with a birdie two then his opponent bogeyed the ninth, leaving McDonald one up at the turn.

Langasque birdied the par five twelfth hole to square the match once more, and edged ahead of McDonald for the second time in the match when the Ayrshire player could only manage a bogey five at the fifteenth hole.

One behind with three to play did not look good for McDonald but his opponent suffered successive bogeys at the sixteenth and seventeenth which allowed McDonald to reverse a one hole deficit into a one hole lead going to the last.

Unfortunately for McDonald In what was a cut and thrust match throughout, the tables turned again and he slipped to successive bogeys at both the eighteenth and nineteenth holes to let his opponent grab the final spot against Grant Forrest from the Ayrshire players grasp.

The 36 hole final between Forrest and Langasque takes place on Saturday, 20th June.
