INNES MCQUEEN MEMORIAL TROPHY - Ayrshire men win innaugural match against Ayrshire Ladies County Golf Association

The inaugural match for the Innes McQueen memorial Trophy, between The Ayrshire Golf Association and Ayrshire Ladies County Golf Association, took place on Sunday 23rd June at Rowallan Castle GC, which the Ayrshire Golf Association team won by 2.5 - 1.5.

Innes McQueen, a Past President of The Ayrshire Golf Association, passed away in 2011 and with his associations with all aspects of Ayrshire golf it was felt appropriate that the offer of a trophy from Innes' family should be accepted and played for in an annual match between teams representing The Ayrshire Golf Association and their female counterparts in the Ayrshire Ladies County Golf Association.

The inaugural event was scheduled to be played in 2012 but had to be abandoned due to weather conditions. There were no such problems this year however, with the Rowallan Castle course in very nice condition for the match, which was played in a testing wind which added to the challenge for the players.

There were four ties in the match which was played in foursomes matchplay format, and in the end the gents team won two, the ladies won one and the remaining tie was halved, leaving the gents team as inaugural winners of the fine trophy by a score of 2.5 - 1.5

At the conclusion of the match, the players enjoyed a very nice meal along with a number of guests, including Innes' widow Cathie, his son Kevin and other family members as well as his long time friends, Ayrshire Golf Association Honorary President Matt Lygate and his wife Mary.

At the end of the days proceedings, Cathie McQueen presented the Innes McQueen Memorial Trophy to Tommy McInally, on behalf of The Ayrshire Golf Association team, and presented medals to both teams provided by Innes' son and former Scottish Boys Champion Andrew, who could not attend due to his professional golf commitments.

The other golfing member of the family who was unable to be at the match was Innes' granddaughter, former ALCGA champion Rachel McQueen, but best wishes were passed on to her from all present as she has recently decided to pursue a career in professional golf in the USA.

From 2013, the match will move to a date in Early May each year which will benefit both teams in preparation for the season ahead and the unique challenges faced in foursomes golf.
