SAME AGAIN BOYS ! - Holders retain team trophies at Ayrshire Boys Team Championships

Boys Team Champions - Kilmarnock Barassie

It was a case of same result, different venue, when the 2013 Ayrshire Boys Team Championship started of the county season at Kilbirnie Place GC on Sunday 21st April, with the holders of both team trophies retaining their titles won last year at Ayr Dalmilling.



12 clubs were represented in the competition, with Kilmarnock (Barassie) defending the Scratch Matt Lygate Trophy and Ballochmyle defending the Handicap Andrew D. Nommo Trophy.

With heavy overnight rain, underfoot conditions were heavy on the course but there were still some notable scores returned from the field of 47 players.

Playing in the early matches, Kilmarnock (Barassie) faced likely competition for their hopes of retaining their crown from a number of teams, most notably Irvine and Troon Welbeck.

In the event however, the Kilmarnock (Barassie) team of Blair Gavin, Callum Gorrie, Stewart Russell & Euan Henderson, inspired by a fine level par scratch score of 69 by Gorrie, posted a three score team total of 220 to win the Matt Lygate Trophy for a third year in succession.


The Irvine team of Stuart Easton, Jack Thomas, Ross McDonald & Stuart Fairgrieve took the runners up spot in the scratch competition on 226.



Handicap Winners - Ballochmyle

In the handicap competition, holders Ballochmyle had an early setback when a late call off left them with only three players in the team meaning that all three scores had to count for their team total. Despite this setback, net scores of 71 by Jordon Drummond and 69 by Andrew Davidson combined with the outstanding net return of the day by Robert Clark, a six under par 63, to see the holder retain the Andrew D. Nimmo Trophy by seven shot with a team total of 203.






Prestwick Circuits Trophy
Callum Gorrie

Callum Gorrie (Kilmarnock Barassie) won the Prestwick Circuits Trophy for the best individual scratch score with his 69 whilst Robert Clark (Ballochmyle) took the Carrick Trophy for the best net return with his 63 off his handicap of 10.

The prize for the best net score in the 0 - 9 handicap group was won by Luke Murdoch (Loudoun) with 76 - 6 = 70 whilst the prize for the 10 - 24 handicap group went to Cameron Grant (Caprington), on the better inward half, with 78 - 10 = 68.

At the conclusion of the competition, Ayrshire Golf Association President Milton Murray (Irvine) presented prizes and trophies to the successful competitors.
