AYRSHIRE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS TROPHY FINAL - McEwan races to first title

Steven McEwan (Caprington) won the Ayrshire Champion Of Champions Trophy for the first time on Friday night, 10th August, at Royal Troon, racing to an 8 & 6 win over James Graham (Doon Valley).

The final was blessed with glorious sunny weather, and a course in superb condition.

With both players appearing in the final for the first time, a new name on the trophy was guaranteed and it was formeer Scotland internationalist McEwan who made the early running, opening with a birdie three to go one up at the first.

McEwan's lead was increased to two holes at the third when Graham conceded the hole after driving into the burn and McEwan went further ahead at the fourth after Graham found a bunker from the tee.
Graham halted the onslaught from McEwan briefly, halving the fifth and sixth holes in par, but further bunker trouble for Graham at the seventh allowed McEwan to increase his lead to four holes courtesy of a solid par four.

At the famous par three eighth, The Postage Stamp, Graham's tee shot was bunkered on the right and his first effort failed to extracate the ball from the sand, whilst McEwan secured a par to increase his lead to five holes.

At the closing hole of the front nine, Graham found rought from the tee whilst McEwan was in perfect position, leading to the Caprington champion securing another hole to turn for home six up.
A couple of uncharacteristicaly poor shots from Graham at the tenth prompted a concession to McEwan who moved to seven up with eight to play.

When the eleventh was halved in par fours, McEwan was dormie and with Mcewan on the twelfth green in two, about 20 feet from the hole, and Graham with a putt for four, the Doon Valley player graciously conceded the hole, the match and the Champion Of Champions title to McEwan with an 8 & 6 victory.
