THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - McDonald edges into last 32

Ayrshire's sole representative in The Amateur Championship, being played at Royal Troon this week, kept local interest alive when he won through to the last 32 on Wednesday evening.

McDonald faced Mathias Eggenberger (Switzerland) in the last 64 of the tournament, his opponent having won through in a preliminary tie in the morning, and the match was close throughout before McDonald edged through to the next stage with a one hole victory.

In the last 32 on Thursday morning, McDonald plays Will McCurdy (USA) who accounted for Geoff Drakeford (Australia) by 8 & 7 to progress.
