The John A. Logan College men’s golf team put together a rally for the ages, erasing an 18-stroke deficit after first-round play to capture yet another Region 24 championship under head coach Tom Ferris to advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association finals in Plymouth, Ind. later this month.

The defending national champion Volunteers posted a team score of 320, good for fourth place overall, but bounced back in a big way Monday, notching a second-round score of 298 and final-round score of 300 to ease past a strong Rend Lake effort by six strokes (918 to 924). That’s a 24-stroke turnaround.

Ferris said he had faith in his team to make it a competition.

“This performance today shows the character of our players,” he said. “We had an unusual first round. It wasn’t typical of us. Nobody’s ever come back from this kind of deficit before, but I told the kids we were capable of being the first team to do it. And they did all the work today. They played extremely well for 36 holes under adverse conditions with the rain and delays. They stepped up when they needed to.”

Ferris also complimented Rend Lake’s effort.
“We knew they would be a tough competitor for us. They have been all year. We’ve gone back and forth. They’ve beaten us and we’ve beaten them. We were just more fortunate today.”

The top individual performance for the Vols went to sophomore Bryce Doughty, a Benton native. Doughty fired a 225, good for second-place overall. Sophomore Colin Robinson was seventh overall with a 230 and Freshman Tucker Guisewite was eighth at 232. All three were named All-Region 24. The John A.
