AYRSHIRE MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - Holder Smyth ousted in quarter finals

The holder of the Ayrshire Matchplay title, Michael Smyth (Royal Troon), relinquished his crown in the quarter finals fo the 2012 competition, being played this week at Western Gailes.

In Tuesday's quarter final matches, Smyth was up against matchplay specialist and five times winner of the Ayrshire Champion Of Champions title Tommy McInally (Loudoun). The tie lived up to its promise with a close run contest only being decided in McInally's favour at the second extra hole.

In the semi finals on Wednesday night Tommy McInally will face David Orchiston (Ballochmyle) who defeated the 2011 runner up Gary Bryden (Girvan) by 5 & 4 to claim his place in the last four.

The new Ayrshire Strokeplay Champion David Wilson (Troon Welbeck) remains on course in his bid for the 'double' after he had a notable one hole quarter final victory against former internationalist Steven McEwan (Loudoun), and he now faces former professional Stuart Robin (Prestwick St Nicholas) in the semi final after Robin overcame Steven Stamper (Girvan) by two holes in their quarter final tie.



The two semi final matches are scheduled for Wednesday evening with the final due to be played on Thursday.
