AYRSHIRE BOYS MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - Beveridge Vs Wilson in Thursday final

David Wilson
The final of the 2011 Ayrshire Boys Matchplay Championship at Prestwick GC on Thursday evening will be between Troon Welbeck clubmates Callum Beveridge and David Wilson.

In dreadful conditions on Wednesday evening, the four semi finalists played some excellent golf under the most trying of conditions.

In the first semi final, Scottish Boys Champion and holder of the Ayrshire Boys Matchplay title, David Wilson, drew on his experience of the event and the course to beat Blair Gavin (Kilmarnock Barassie) by 3 & 2 to continue his bid for three successive wins in the event.

Callum Beveridge
The second semi final between Callum Beveridge and Callum Gorrie (Kilmarnock Barassie) was a close affair throughout, which saw Beveridge, the recently crowned Ayrshire Boys Champion, take a one hole lead approaching the final hole. With Beveridge looking likely to secure his par four after a good first putt, Gorrie slotted a birdie put from 18 feet to take the match into extra holes.

As has happened on a number of occassions, the first hole at Prestwick provided a dramatic play off.

Gorrie teed off first but saw his effort go over the railway wall and out of bounds. Beveridge found the safety of the fairway, but with a long second shot to the green, whilst Gorrie played an excellent second tee shot.

Beveridge found the green with his second, with Gorrie also reaching the putting surface with hs approach, his fourth shot.

Beveridge putted up to around 5 feet from the hole, only to see Gorrie hole his putt for a five to keep the pressure on. Despite this, Beveridge holed his par putt and claimed the place in the final at the first extra hole.

The final on Thursday evening at Prestwick GC is scheduled to tee off at 4.30 p.m.
