The ladies of Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club, who were relegated from Division 1 of the West Of Scotland Ladies Inter Club Championship for the Greenlees Trophy 12 months ago, have secured promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt and, in dramatic fashion, also won the Division 2 title in their final match of the season at a very wind Prestwick St Nicholas course on Tuesday 14th September.
The St Nicholas team began their match against Lanark knowing that a 7.5 - 1.5 win or better would see them snatch the title from leaders Whitecraigs and the team rose to the challenge, Catherine Malcolm, Rosalind Purdom, Robina Gilbertson, Anne Wallace and Moira Whiticombe making the goal of 7.5 points achievable by winning the first series of ties on the course for a 5 - 0 lead.
Maureen Short, in the eighth tie, made it 6 - 0 for St Nicholas before Wendy Holligworth suffered a rare loss in her tie at number 7 to make the match score 6 - 1 in favour of St Nicholas.
With only two ties remaining on the course, Fay Ross secured an all important half match in the sixth tie, which left the destination of the title in the hands of Sheila Shedden in the ninth and final tie.
Leading by one hole with two to play, Sheila Shedden rose to the challenge and took the 17th for a 2 & 1 victory, sparking title celebrations for the Prestwick St Nicholas Ladies, having secured the all important 7.5 - 1.5 match result to win the Division 2 title.
With only the match between Erskine & Bothwell Castle remaining to be played, the present positions in Division 2 are :-
49.0 - PRESTWICK ST NICHOLAS
48.5 - WHITECRAIGS
40.5 - HILTON PARK
44.0 - HAGGS CASTLE
33.5 - EASTWOOD
28.0 - WILLIAMWOOD
27.0 - LANARK
25.5 - ERSKINE
19.0 - BOTHWELL CASTLE
