GREENLEES TROPHY - Ayrshire clubs home in on glory

Ayrshire sides in the three divisions of the West Of Scotland Ladies Inter Club Leagues for the Greenlees Trophy are close to glory as the competition nears a conclusion by the end of September.

Troon Ladies boosted their title hoppes recently with a 6.5 - 2.5 home win over Douglas Park which moved the club up to fifth in the table, with two matches remaining.

Leaders Cathkin Braes have one remaining match, at home to Ranfurly Castle, and will be looking to put points on the board to push them clear of their nearest challengers.

With five matches remaining to be concluded in the section, any one of the four leading teams could take the Greenlees Trophy and title of Division 1 Champions.

In the run in it looks like the pivotal fixtures will be the matches between Troon Ladies and Milngavie, at Milngavie, and the Troon Ladies home match against near neighbours Kilmarnock (Barassie).

At the other end of the table, West Kilbride face a crunch home match in their final fixture, against Ranfurly Castle, as they try to escape the drop into dicvision 2 for next season.

Present positions in Division 1 are :-

39.5 - CATHKIN BRAES

Ayrshire's sole representatives in Division 2, Prestwick St Nicholas, took a giant step towards promotion on Monday with a 5.5 - 3.5 win away at Williamwood. This moved the St Nicolas ladies into second place in the table, behind Whitecraigs, and almost assured the club of a place in Division 1 next season.

Haggs Castle, with a home result against Erskine still awaited, can mathamatically still catch St Nicholas, as can Erskine with their away result at Haggs Castle still to be posted and a home match against Bothwell Castle still to play. However, both these teams must also rely on St Nicholas being heavily defeated in their final match at home to Lanark, as well as winning their respective remaining matches by considerable margins.

With Lanark fighting for survival in Division 2, the St Nicholas ladies will not have their final match, on Tuesday 14th September, all their own way but they go into the match in the knowledge that a win by 7.5 - 1.5 or better will not only give them promotion but will see them go back into the top flight as Division 2 Champions.

48.5 - WHITECRAIGS
41.5 - PRESTWICK ST NICHOLAS
40.5 - HILTON PARK
35.0 - HAGGS CASTLE
33.5 - EASTWOOD

25.5 - ERSKINE
25.5 - LANARK
19.0 - BOTHWELL CASTLE

Ayrshire's sole representatives in Division 3, Largs are well ahead in the table with one match still remaining to be played, and are almost certain of winning the league title.

Present positions in the league are :-

46.5 - Largs
34.0 - Cowglen
32.5 - Greenock
28.0 - Old Ranfurly
