SCOTTISH MID AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - Craig Hamilton takes national title


Craig Hamilton from Ballochmyle is the 2010 Scottish Mid Amateur Champion, after beating former winner Craig Watson of the host club at The East Renfrewshire Golf Club in the final on Monday afternoon.
In his morning semi final Hamilton beat Scott Ritchie (New Zealand) by 3 & 1 to book his place in the final whilst Watson beat Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) by 2 & 1 in the other semi final.
In the final, Hamilton got the upper hand early on, winning the second hole with a par and following that with successive birdies at the third and fourth to forge a three hole advanatage. A further birdie at the par five eighth increased Hamilton's lead to four holes but Watson hit hback with a birdie three at the ninth to reduce the defecit to three holes at the turn.
A fourth birdie of the round for Hamilton at the tenth restored his four hole lead but again Watson produced a winning birdie thre at the eleventh to reduce the defecit to three holes once more.
A birdie two at the 13th for watson reduced the defecit further, to two holes but Hamilton stemmed the tide with pars at the fourteenth and fifteenth to maintain his two hole lead with three to play.
With a three at the sixteenth hole, Hamilton produced his fifth birdie of the final round and importantly won the hole for a 3 & 2 win and the Scottish Mid Amateur title for 2010.
