SGU AREA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - Ayrshire start defence of title in winning style

Ayrshire began their defence of the SGU Area Team Championship title on Sunday 17th May with a 5 - 4 victory over Stirlingshire at Falkirk Tryst.

In the morning foursomes, Scott Brown (Turnberry) and George Robertson (Irvine Ravenspark) lost out by 2 & 1 but the pairing of Tommy McInally (Loudoun) and Jamie MacKay (Kilmarnock Barassie) levelled the match with a 3 & 2 win before John Shanks (Irvine) - pictured right - and Steven Murray (Troon Welbeck) gave Ayrshire a 2 - 1 lunchtime lead with a 3 & 1 win in their match.



Tommy McInally lost in the lead singles by 2 holes in the afternoon but the middle order secured the match for Ayrshire, County Strokeplay Champion John Shanks winning by 4 & 3, Jamie Mackay - pictured below right - crushing his opponent by 6 & 5 and new Ayrshire Matchplay Champion Scott Brown - pictured left - securing the crucial point with a 3 & 2 win in his match.
In the two remaining ties Steven Murray and George Robertson both lost on the last green to their respective opponents.
