AYRSHIRE STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - Wallace leads from the front to take title

Steven Wallace (Prestwick St. Cuthbert) led from the front to land the 2008 Ayrshire Strokeplay Championship at Prestwick Golf Club on Sunday 20th April.

Plus 2 handicapper Wallace, a Scottish Amateur Championship semi finalist in 2002 and multiple winner of The Tam O Shanter Tournament won his first Ayrshire County title by two strokes from Paul Moultrie (Troon Portland) after leading the field by one shot after the first round.
A level par 71 in testing conditions in round 1 put Wallace one shot ahead of John Cairney (Irvine Ravenspark) with defending champion John Shanks (Irvine) and youth internationalist Steven McEwan (Caprington) two further back on 74.

With the wind increasing in the afternoon, competitors found scoring more difficult, but as many of the challengers faded away, Steven Wallace returned a creditable 76 for a 147 total.

Playing with Wallace, Paul Moultrie (Troon Portland), a semi finalist in the British Mid Amateur Championship last year, was one of the few players who improved in the second round, his afternoon 74 being one stroke better than his morning effort, for a total of 149.

Steven McEwan (Caprington) took third place with 74 and 76 for a 150 total followed by three players on 151 which included Del Chamberlain of Troon Welbeck, James Bunch of the host club and John Cairney from Irvine Ravenspark.

The CSS for both rounds of the championship was reduction only.

At the conclusion of the Championship, Tim Morrison, Captain of Prestwick Golf Club, assisted by Ayrshire Golf Association President Ricky Magee (Caprington) distributed prizes to the leading players and presented the Ayrshire Strokeplay Championshiop trophy to Steven Wallace.
