LEVEN GOLD MEDAL - McEwan leads after course record round

Steven McEwan (Caprington) leads the Leven Gold Medal after setting a new course record in the first round on Saturday 11th August, reducing the record by a shot with a superb round of nine-under-par 62.

McEwan, winner of the Scottish boys' stroke-play championship at Monifieth in 2005, had a run of five successive 3s from the fifth to the ninth, including an eagle at the sixth and a birdie at the eighth, to be out in four-under-par 30.

McEwan held his score together in showery weather to come in 32 for 62, to give him a three stroke lead over James White (Lundin), after round one of the 72 hole event.

McEwan followed his course record score with a second round 69 for an 11 under par halfway total of 131.

This gave McEwan a one stroke lead over former Scottish boys’ match-play champion White.

The cut for the final 36 holes on Sunday fell at 144. The other two Ayrshire players in the field, Ross Dixon (Kilmarnock Barassie) and Chris Harkins (Ayr Belleisle) both survived the cut.
