PRESTWICK LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP - Lawrie triumphs in 50th contest for the Nickson Trophy

The 50th Prestwick Links Championship concluded on Saturday evening, 28th May, with Gavin Lawrie (Prestwick St. Nicholas) taking the honours in blustery conditions over the links of Prestwick Golf Club .

The former Scottish Internationalist, who surprisingly has never won the Prestwick Links Championship before, won through to the final on Friday night with a 2 & 1 win over Mark Crane (Prestwick St. Cuthbert).

In the final, Gavin Lawrie met Steven McBlain (Prestwick St. Cuthbert) who reached the final courtesy of a 4 & 3 win in the semi final over Stuart Robin (Prestwick St. Nicholas)

Lawrie coped best in the difficult conditions in the final, and was four ahead playing the 15th hole. A solid par 4 at the 15th drew a concession from McBlain and Lawrie took the match by 4 & 3.

The final of the handicap matchplay, for the Hugh Boyd Cup, was also played on Saturday night and was an all St. Cuthbert affair, with Steven Gillies playing clubmate Colin Pyper. In what proved to be something of a one sided contest, Steven Gillies won by 6 & 5 to take the Boyd cup for the first time.

Prizes for the best qualifying scores, in the opening strokeplay rounds on Monday and Tuesday, over St. Nicholas and St. Cuthbert were awarded to Steven King (Prestwick St. Nicholas), with a scratch total of 142, and Graeme Gimson (Prestwick St. Cuthbert) with a nett aggregate of 134.

Prizes were presented to the succesful competitors, at the conclusion of the final, by David Mitchell, Captain of Prestwick Golf Club.
