WEST OF SCOTLAND INTER COUNTY LEAGUES - Only one of six fixtures played in week 4


Only one of the six scheduled fixtures on Sunday the 8th of October in the West of Scotland inter county A and Youth Leagues survived the unprecedented wet weather on week 4 of the series.

The only fixture which survived was at Troon Darley where the Ayrshire youths team had a narrow 4.5 – 3.5 victory over their visitors from Glasgow.

SCOTTISH SENIORS INTER AREA CHAMPIONSHIP - Ayrshire team for Monifieth announced.

The six man Ayrshire team to contest the Scottish Seniors Inter Area team Championship at Monifieth GC on Thursday the 12th of October has been announced. 

The team features Scottish Seniors internationalist Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) along with the 2023 winner of the Ayrshire Senior Men's Matchplay Championship Brian Fisher (Largs), and the 2022 winner, and beaten finalist this year, Alistair Belford (Prestwick St Nicholas).

Stuart Miller (Kilmarnock Barassie) and Robbie Stewart (Troon Portland) make a return to the team this year, alongside John McKean (Prestwick).

The best five scores from six will determine the team score in the competition.

GOLFSIXES - Irvine finish in third place in national final in Perth

The Irvine Golf Club GolfSixes team finished in third place at the national finals in Perth on Sunday the 1st of October. 

The Irvine team score of 128 was just three behind the best score of 131 posted by both Dornoch and Swanston.

Swanston went on to win the 2023 title in a play off.

Well done to the Irvine team on winning the Ayrshire qualifier, the regional final and doing so well in the national final.

AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE - West Kilbride win Wallace Thornton Trophy

West Kilbride won the final Ayrshire Junior Golf League trophy of the season on Sunday the 1st of October, when they defeated Irvine in the final of the Wallace Thornton Trophy at Ayr Belleisle golf course.

The 2023 final was West Kilbride's first appearance at this st
age of the competition since 2007, having now won the trophy since 1997, while Irvine were runners up in the event in 2021, which they last won in 2015.

West Kilbride took the early initiative, winning the opening two ties, but the Irvine team fought back to win the remaining two ties to give a match score of 2 - 2.

On a countback over the scores in the individual ties, West Kilbride were determined the winners with a countback score of  13 - 4, and secured the trophy for the first time in 26 years.

AYRSHIRE JUNIOR ORDER OF MERIT - Sean Hillis confirmed as 2023 winner after completion of final event

Sean Hillis (Kilmarnock Barassie) was confirmed as the Ayrshire Junior Order of Merit title winner after the final qualifying event, The Irvine Junior Open, was completed on Monday the 25th of September, when the second and third place players for 2023 were also confirmed.

Hillis had a clear lead prior to the final event, with only the runner up and third places still to be decided.

Finlay Watt (West Kilbride) confirmed his runners up spot in the Order of Merit with his scratch score of 76 giving him a share of maximum points with Finlay Andrew (Turnberry).

The third place position was a straight shoot out between the Irvine pair of Liam Moran and Ryan Kennedy, and it was Moran who secured third place with a scratch score of  77 giving him points for third position in the returns at Irvine ahead of Kennedy whose score of 80gave him a share of fifth place with Adam Cowan (Loudoun).

AYRSHIRE SCRATCH LEAGUES - Loudoun and Troon Portland retain league places after play offs

Loudoun and Troon Portland have retained their respective Scratch League places following completion of the play off matches recently.

In the Division 1/2 play off, Loudoun led Turnberry 4 - 2 after the first leg at Loudoun but in the second leg Turnberry reversed the score, leaving the overall match ties at 6 - 6. On the countback over the individual ties in both legs, Loudoun were confirmed as the winners with a countback score of 30 - 21 in their favour.

In the Division 2/3 play offs, Troon Portland held a 4.5 - 1.5 lead over Ardeer from the first leg over the Portland course and in the second leg at Ardeer Portland won by 3.5 - 2.5 to give an overall match score of 8 - 4 in their favour.

WEST OF SCOTLAND INTER COUNTY LEAGUES - Lanarkshire lead both A and Youths leagues after week three

Lanarkshire lead both the West of Scotland A and Youths Inter County leagues after week three of the five week series of matches, played on Sunday the 1st of October.

In the A league there were 5 – 3 home wins for Renfrewshire at Fereneze and Lanarkshire at Bothwell Castle over Glasgow and Stirlingshire respectively, while Ayrshire recorded a home win over Dumbartonshire at Kilmarnock Barassie by 5.5 – 2.5
