SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - Four from six through for Ayrshire on day 1

Four of the six Ayrshire golfers in action on day one of the Scottish Amateur Championship at Downfield in Dundee, on Monday 28th July, were successful in booking their place in the second round.

In the very first match on the course, at 6.45 a.m., Malcolm Pennycott (Whiting Bay) edged through by one hole against Jamie Pryde (Deeside), and will now play 2005 championship winner Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie) in the second round.

Ayrshire's first disappointment of the day came when J Johnston (Ayr Belleisle) lost out to Angus Carrick (Douglas Park) on the final green, by one hole.

Kenny Macaskill (Turnberry Staff) beat Fraser Milne (Fraserburgh) by two holes in their opening round match, and now faces Christopher Hutcheon (Monifieth) in round two.

Also through the opening round is Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) who had a 4 & 3 win over Jackson Bell (Mortonhall) to line up a second round encounter with Ross Kane (Glenbervie).

Scotland internationalist Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) had a comfortable 6 & 4 win over Sam Macneil (Aboyne) to progress. McDonald now plays Fraser Moore (Glenbervie) in round two.

The other Ayrshire player to exit in round one on Monday was boys internationalist Stuart Easton (Irvine) who lost out by 4 & 3 to Ben Ferguson (The Vines).

Thirteen other Ayrshire hopefuls begin their title bid on Tuesday when the remaining first round matches take place.

EUROPEAN WOMANS AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHP - Top 20 finish for Connie Jaffrey

Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) shot a final round of three-under-par 69 for a total of 290 and tied for 19th place in the European women's amateur golf championship at Estonia Golf and Country Club.

Jaffrey finished 12 shots behind the two Spaniards who tied for the title on 278, Luna Sobron and Noemi Jimenez.

Sobron, beaten in the final of the 2013 British women's amateur championship, won the marathon play-off at the eighth extra hole of sudden-death play.

 

Lauren Whyte (St Regulus), the only other Scot to survive the third-round cut, finished joint 44th on 296 after a final round of 75.

The top British player was Meghan MacLaren (Wellingborough) who finished T14 on 289 with rounds of 73, 70, 73 and 73.

AYRSHIRE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS - Malcolm Pennycott secures remaining semi final place

The semi final line up for the 2014 Ayrshire Champion Of Champions Trophy competition was completed this week, with Malcolm Pennycott (Whiting bay) claiming the remaining place in the last four. 


Pennycott, a former Ayrshire Boys Matchplay Champion, eased into the penultimate round with a comfortable 6 & 5 victory at home over Kenny Macaskill (Turnberry Staff).

The semi finals take place at Royal Troon Golf Club on Friday 8th August, with the final scheduled for the same venue the following week on Friday 15th August.

EUROPRO TOUR - Best finish so far for Michael Stewart

Former Scottish Amateur Champion Michael Stewart from Troon finished fourth in the Alps De Andalucía tournament in Spain this week.

The former Troon Welbeck member, who also won the Scottish Boys Championship and played in the successful G B & I Walker Cup team at Royal Aberdeen in a glittering amateur career, secured a prize of 2,500 euros in the Alps Tour 54-hole event in southern Spain, at Real Golf Guadalamina.

Stewart strung together rounds of 69, 69 and 65 for a 13-under-par total of 203, leaving him just three shots adrift of the Spanish winner, Borja Etchart who recorded rounds of 68, 67 & 65 for a 10 under par total of 200.

AYRSHIRE BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP - Draw for Ayr Belleisle

The 2014 Ayrshire Boys Championship takes place at Ayr Belleisle GC on Thursday 7th August.

For the second successive year, entries to the event, the premier title in Ayrshire boys golf, have been disappointingly low by the closing date, with spaces still remaining.

There are still some spaces available for the Ayrshire Boys Championship.

The 36 hole event carries both scratch and handicap prizes.

Handicap limit is 12 and entry fee is £10

Players returning the best 8 scratch scores in the championship will go forward to contest the Ayrshire Boys Matchplay Championship at Prestwick Golf Club from 18th to 21st August.

Remaining places will be filled on a first come first served basis.

Players considering submitting a late entry should note that NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED ON THE DAY OF THE COMPETITION. Consequently any player who has not yet entered and wishes to do so should contact the area secretary, Alasdair Malcolm as soon as possible and forward the entry form and relevant fee.
