14 member clubs were represented at the Annual General Meeting of the Association, held at Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club on Wednesday 20th October 2004.
Outgoing President, Robin Baker (Troon Welbeck) opened proceedings by welcoming the members present before giving a summary of the Associations activities throughout the season, and paying tribute to the members of the County Executive for their efforts during his two year term of office.
President Baker made particular mention of long serving Secretary/Treasurer, Leslie Crawford, Coaching Convenor Ricky Magee and his team, Ian Walker and Ian Guthrie for their work with the Boys and Youths teams, Course rating officials Iain Harvey and David McKie, SGU representative Morgan Hall and the tournament convenor Sandy Provan, who ensured that the events throughout the year passed succesfully.
President Baker gave a resume of the competitions throughout the season.
The Strokeplay Championship over Troon Lochgreen was shared, for the first time, by Alex Gourlay (Irvine) and Ross Duncan (Brodick), who could not be seperated after 6 play off holes.
David McLure (Ballochmyle) beat defending champion, Barry Crawford (West Kilbride) in the Matchplay Championship final at Western Gailes.
The Ayrshire Club Championship was contested at the Kelburn course in Largs, and it was the team from the host club, Largs, who won the title this year. The club went on to represent Ayrshire in the Scottish Final at Erskine, finishing in 9th place.
The Ayrshire Boys Championship was played in August at Kilmarnock (Barassie) and resulted in Iain Menzies (Largs) edging out Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) to take the strokeplay title.
The Ayrshire Boys Matchplay was again contested over the links of Prestwick Golf Club and Michael Stewart again found himself the runner up, with Jamie Murchie (Lamlash) winning the trophy this year.
Royal Troon was again the venue for the final of the Ayrshire Champion Of Champions competition and Tommy McInally (Loudoun) was succesful in defending the trophy, beating John Sloan (Doon Valley) on the final green.
The John Boyd Memorial Quaich was won at Caprington by a team from Annanhill G.C. with Hurlford Loco taking second place.
Annanhill also took the Ayrshire Fourball title, beating Doon Valley in the final at Ardeer in September.
The Autumn meeting at Ardeer was well supported by the host club in particular, with many locals featuring in the prizes, led by Sam Stewart with the best nett. Alan McLean of Kilbirnie Place won the scratch prize.
The Summer League competition was won for the second successive year by Ballochmyle who narrowly defeated Irvine (Bogside) by 6.5 - 5.5 in the two leg final.
The Doc Thom Order Of Merit was won by Barry Crawford of West Kilbride with David McLure (Ballochmyle) taking the runners up spot.
President Baker also reported on the achievements of Ayrshire players on a national level, in particular the Kilmarnock Barassie trio of Robert McKnight, David Addison and Steven McEwan who all represented Scotland at Boys International level throughout the season, and Cameron Gray (West Kilbride) along with Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) who both gained international honours at under 16 level.
The Boys County Team narrowly failed to win the Wishart Trophy in the West Of Scotland league, despite some good results.
The County A Team narrowly failed to reach the last four in the Area Team Championships, with the highlight being a notable win over Perth & Kinross at Blairgowrie in their final section match.
On conclusion of the Presidents Report, Secretary Leslie Crawford gave the financial report before Ricky Magee reported on coaching matters.
The team of 3 coaching professionals, Gregor Howie, Graham Ross and Bill Lockie were augmented this year by Richard Gordon , assistant professional at Ayr Belleisle, who joined the team to assist in the delivery of an increasingly strong coaching structure.
The number of coaching days this season were increased from the previous year and included boys at all levels, from under 14 through to under 18, with a further development being scheduled for Sunday 14th November, with a talent ID day at Inverclyde National Sports Centre at Largs. Through club junior convenors, a number of boys, mostly under 14 years of age have been identified and will be invited to attend training and assessment sessions throughout the day.
In closing Mr. Magee paid tribute to the praactical support received from Wilson Sporting Goods and Brunston Castle Golf Club and the efforts of Ian Walker, in respect of the coaching programme and its delivery.
A brief course rating report was given before Morgan Hall reported on the business of the Scottish Golf Union throughout the year.
Mr. Hall report touched on the demise of the Scottish National Golf Centre, Child and Adult Protection issues, the unified CONGU handicapping scheme and other matters, including new appointments within the SGU and the work of the Junuior Golf Partnership and the Clubgolf inituiative, the national project to give all 9 year olds in Scotland the opportunity to experience golf, by 2009.
In conclusion, Mr. Hall praised the 5 juniors from Ayrshire who had gained international recognition throughout the season and hoped that this success would continue and Ayrshire would provide some full international representatives in the near future.

At the conclusion of the reports, President Baker thanked the members for the honour of serving as President, before nominating Ian Guthrie (Ballochmyle) as his successor.
On election to the Presidency, Ian Guthrie paid tribute to the efforts of Robin Baker over his tenure as President, and throughout his term on the Executive.
Mr. Guthrie thereafter successfully nominated Ricky Magee (Caprington) as Vice President for the next two years.
Leslie Crawford was re elected as Secretary Treasurer of the association.
Sandy Provan (Kilmarnock Barassie) and Morgan Hall (West Kilbride) were re elected to the Executive, whilst Stewart Macaulay (Kilmarnock Barassie) was also elected to the Execuitive to fill the third available vacancy.
Morgan Hall was re elected as Ayrshire's representative to the SGU.
Prior to the conclusion of the meeting it was agreed that the per capita subscription to The Association for member clubs would remain at £1.75 and the meeting was advised that the per capita subscription to the SGU would reduce to £6.00 next year.
The meeting closed at 8.05 p.m. with a vote of thanks to the chair.

WEST OF SCOTLAND LEAGUES - Youth team extend unbeaten run with victory over Stirlingshire - A Team match postponed
The Ayrshire youths team extended their unbeaten run in this years West Of Scotland Inter County Youths League to 4 games with a 7 - 3 win over Stirlingshire at Ayr Seafield on Saturday (30th October).
With Ayrshire leading in most of the ties throughout, only John Sloan (Doon Valley) and Gary Neil (Caprington) suffered defeat, both by the narrowest one hole margin.
Ian Guthrie (Ballochmyle) who, unlike his team mates,was down during most of his tie gained a notable half match by driving the final green and holing his putt for an eagle 2 to win the hole and square the match.

WEST OF SCOTLAND LEAGUES - Youth team gain draw away to Renfrewshire
The Ayrshire youth team grabbed a last gasp draw in their latest match in this seasons West Of Scotland Inter County League, against joint league leaders Renfrewshire, at Caldwell on Saturday 23rd October.
With both teams having won their opening matches, the game was always likely to be close.
Ayrshire took the early lead, with John Sloan (Doon Valley) and Ian Guthrie (Ballochmyle) winning the opening two ties by 3 & 2 and 1 hole respectively, but Renfrewshire took the following two games to square the match at 2 - 2.
In the 5th tie Graeme Gebbie (Loudoun) was unfortunate to lose the head of, and the use of, his driver early in the match, which no doubt contributed to his 5 & 4 defeat, but Craig Hamilton (Ballochmyle) squared the match at 3 - 3 with a 2 hole win in match 6.
Defeats for Lee Hughes (Belleisle) and Jamie Mackay (St. Meddans) in the 7th and 10th ties left Renfrewshire 5 - 3 ahead and only requiring a half in one of the remaining two games on the course.
Alastair Leggate (Barassie) reduced the defecit to 5 - 4 with a 2 & 1 win in his tie, leaving Cameron Gray (West Kilbride) to shoulder Ayrshire's hopes. All square on the 18th tee, the former Ayrshire Boys Champion and under 16 internationalist showed his mettle, gaining a fine birdie on the last hole to give him a 1 hole win and Ayrshire a very worthwile draw in the match.

AYRSHIRE GOLF ASSOCIATION - Ian Guthrie of Ballochmyle elected President at A.G.M.
Ian Guthrie of Ballochmyle Golf Club was elected President of The Ayrshire Golf Association for the next two years, at the Annual General Meeting at Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club on Wednesday 20th October.

WEST OF SCOTLAND LEAGUES - Ayrshire A Team defeat Glasgow
On Saturday (16th) the Ayrshire A team bounced back from last week's defeat at Dumbarton to record a good home win over Glasgow at West Kilbride.
Defeat in the opening match for Barry Crawford of the host club was offset by David Addison's notable win over Peter Jamieson of Cathkin Braes.
In the third tie, Kilmarnock Barassie's boys internationalist, Steven McEwan was far from disgraced in his 4 & 3 defeat, his opponent Keith McNair being 5 under par when the match concluded.
The middle order matches proved decisive for Ayrshire, the St. Cuthbert duo of David Glass and Steven Wallace both recording 4 & 3 wins and Robert McKnight having a notable 2 & 1 win against Glasgow Open winner Graeme Cox of Pollock.
Despite Kevin Ferguson (St. Cuthbert) suffering a narrow defeat, the last three Ayrshire players, Steven Spence, Tommy Loy and Ian Brown took 2.5 points from 3 to complete a good team performance.

The Ayrshire Youths team gained their second successive win in this season's West Of Scotland inter county championship with a 7 - 3 win on Saturday 16th October over Glasgow at Bishopbriggs. The 10 man team recorded five wins, four halved matches and only one defeat in the match, with the most notable performance of the day being the effort of Ballochmyle's Jamie Wilson, who fought back from 4 down with 4 to play, for a half match.

WEST OF SCOTLAND LEAGUES - A Team narrowly defeated by Dumbartonshire
Despite an encouraging start in their first match in this seasons West Of Scotland County League, the Ayrshire A team suffered a narrow 6 - 4 defeat at Helensburgh on Saturday 9th October, against Dumbartonshire.
Tommy McInally (Loudoun) had a difficult task in the lead match, against former Scottish Champion and Walker Cup squad member Andrew MacArthur (Windyhill), with the scottish internationalist taking the tie by 5 & 4 to put Dumbartonshire into the lead.
In the second tie, Scottish boys internationalist David Addison (Kilmarnock Barassie) earned a notable half match against fellow boys internationalist and Scottish Boys Champion, Scott Henry (Cardross).
When Kilmarnock Barassie duo, Stuart MacAulay and Alan Dickie won the next two ties, by 3 & 2 and 2 & 1 over Kevin Smith and Craig Checkley respectively, Ayrshire held a 2.5 - 1.5 lead.
Despite this, only a half match from David Glass (Prestwick St. Cuthbert) and a 4 & 3 win by Barry Crawford (West Kilbride) could add to Ayrshire's total, leaving them just short of taking anything from the match.
In the remaining ties, David Orchison (Ballochmyle) was defeated by 3 & 2 in his debut match for the county side, both Ross Duncan (Brodick) and Steven Spence (Irvine) suffered 2 & 1 defeats, whilst Stephen McBlain (Prestwickl St. Cuthbert) was narrowly defeated by one hole to give Dumbartonshire a clear win in the match.

AYRSHIRE GOLF ASSOCIATION - Ballochmyle take summer league title
Ballochmyle became the 2004 Summer League champions on Sunday when they narrowly edged out Irvine (Bogside) over the two leg final matches.
On Saturday Irvine played host to the new champions at the Bogside course, but it was the visitors, Ballochmyle, who gained the advantage with a 3.5 - 2.5 victory.
The second leg on Sunday proved very close, but the Ballochmyle squad did enough in their home match to secure a 3-3 draw and take the title by 6.5 - 5.5 overall.

AYRSHIRE GOLF ASSOCIATION - Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting of the Ayrshire Golf Association will be held at Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club on Wednesday 20th October 2004 at 7.30 p.m..
The meeting will be called upon to elect County Officials, a county Executive Committee and deal with other matters arising. There will also be various reports tabled, regarding a variety of County matters during the 2004 season. Current A.G.A. President Robin Baker (Troon Welbeck) stands down this year, with Vice President Ian Guthrie (Ballochmyle) being proposed as his successor.
Member clubs have been circulated with details of the meeting, to which all member clubs are invited to send representation.

AYRSHIRE GOLF ASSOCIATION - Annanhill take 2004 Fourball title
Annanhill are the 2004 Ayrshire Fourball champions after a 5 & 4 victory in the final at Ardeer on Sunday 19th September.
The Annahill team of Steven Craig (10) and Gordon Hope (7) faced Ayrshire Champion Of Champions Trophy finalist John Sloan (3) and his partner John Barr (10) of Doon Valley in the final, but were comfortable winners to take the shield back to the Kilmarnock club for the next 12 months.

After the final qualifying event at Prestwick St. Nicholas last week, Barry Crawford of West Kilbride retained his lead in the Ayrshire Order Of Merit to take the Doc Thom Salver.
David McLure (Ballochmyle) took the runners up spot from Kevin Fergusson (Prestwick St. Cuthbert) who edged Brodick's Ross Duncan into 4th place by a mere 5 points.

WEST OF SCOTLAND BOYS LEAGUE - Ayrshire take on champions elect in final match of the season
The West Of Scotland Boys inter county league for the Wishart Trophy concludes this Sunday (26th September) with Glasgow and Dumbartonshire meeting at Cowglen and Ayrshire entertaining Stirlingshire at Brunston Castle.
Despite a run of good results, Ayrshire cannot, even with a win on Sunday, overtake the champions elect, Stirlingshire, but will be aiming to end their visitors 100% record in this seasons championship. Stirlingshire clinched the title with a 5.5 - 2.5 away win against Dumbartonshire at Clober last month, whilst Renfrewshire, defeated by Ayrshire in August, bounced back in their final match, played last week, with a 7 - 1 win over Lanarkshire at Paisley.

AYRSHIRE GOLF ASSOCIATION - County team pipped for semi final spot in Area Team Championships
Despite a 5 - 4 away win in their final section match in the 2004 Area Team Championship, against Perth & Kinross at Blairgowrie on Sunday 19th September, Ayrshire just failed to qualify for the semi finals as North East defeated Stirling by 8 - 1 to progress to the last four from the section.
In the semi finals, North East face South Of Scotland whilst Lothians take on Glasgow in the other semi final.

AYRSHIRE LADIES COUNTY GOLF ASSOCIATION - Thomson takes the honours at Ballochmyle
Audrey Thomson of Loudoun Gowf Club recorded the best scratch score in the recent A.L.C.G.A. Thistle Brooches competition, held at Ballochmyle on Tuesday 14 September, her 8 over par score of 78 being the best on a difficult day for scoring, which saw the C.S.S rise by 3 to 73.
Best Silver went to Morag McPherson of Kilmarnock Barassie with 80 - 8 = 72, who pipped County Captain Eila MacLennan, also from Kilmarnock Barassie, and Christine McClure (Irvine) who both recorded net 74's, the Captain taking second spot by virtue of the better inward half.
In the Bronze section, Alison Jamieson (West Kilbride) recorded the best nett score of the day with 91 - 21 = 70, finishing 6 shots ahead of Sheila Maxwell (Belleisle Ladies) and Val Smith (Kilmarnock Barassie), with Maxwell taking second place by virtue of the better inward half.

AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE - Ardeer retain the title with narrow victory
Reigning champions Ardeer became the first team to retain the Ayrshire Junior Golf League Championship since Ballochmyle in 1999, when they defeated Kilmarnock Barassie by 3.5 - 2.5 in the final at Largs Golf Club on Sunday 12 September.
Ardeer were giving shots in 4 of the 6 ties, but the defending champions overcame their challengers despite the shots given in the last four games.
Fergus Cunningham put the first points on the board for Ardeer. Playing in game 2 against Euan Brown, Cunningham raced to a 5 hole lead after 8. Brown stopped the charge temporarily with a birdie 3 at the 386 yard 9th hole, after Cunningham's attempt had hit the hole and stayed out, and Cunningham started the inward half with a 4 hole lead. Despite the loss of the 9th, Cunningham was soon back on track, taking successive holes from the 10th to the 12th for a 7 & 6 victory in his game.
Ardeer soon held a 2 - 0 lead in the match courtesy of left hander Martin Dunning in game 4. Three up after three holes against Neil Hamilton, Dunning continued to keep the pressure on his opponent, extending his lead to 5 holes after 6 and going further ahead by the turn, with a 7 hole advantage after 9. With Hamilton struggling with his game, Dunning took full advantage, taking the 10th and 11th holes for a 9 & 7 victory.
With two large winning margins, Ardeer only realistically required a 3 - 3 draw overall to take the title on the countback, and the decisive point came courtesy of Garry Dixon in game 6. With an early 2 hole lead over Scott Allison, Dixon extended his advantage to 3 holes after 6, courtesy of a three putt by Allison. Dixon further extended his lead to 4 holes at the turn, and successive wins at 10 and 11 gave him a 6 hole lead with 7 to play. Despite a brave effort to extend the game, Allison narrowly failed to prevent Dixon winning a third successive hole at the 12th, giving Dixon a 7 & 6 win and Ardeer a 3 - 0 lead in the match.
With three ties still on the course, Ardeer hoped for a further half point for an outright victory, but the Barassie team were not willing to give up the possibility of an 3-3 draw in the match easily.
In the lead match between John Shanks (Ardeer) and Stuart Henderson (Barassie), there was little to separate the two 3 handicappers. Shanks turned for home with a slim 1 hole lead, but Henderson squared the match by the 13th, before taking a 1 hole lead after 15. Shanks maintained his challenge to the final hole, but Henderson maintained his grip on the tie, taking the final hole for a victory by 2 holes and Barassie's first match point of the afternoon.
In game 3, Scott Ainsworth and David Currie had a tough match. Currie began well, taking the first two holes, but Ainsworth reduced the deficit to 1 hole at the par 3 4th, par being sufficient after Currie tangles with a boundary fence and could only manage a bogey 4. Currie immediately restored his advantage at the 5th, a superb approach to within 2 feet of the hole setting up a winning birdie 3. Despite the players trading holes, Currie's 2 hole advantage was maintained through 11, but again Ainsworth reduced the deficit to 1 hole after 15. Halved holes at 16 and 17 maintained Currie's lead to the final hole. At the last, Currie's approach finished at the back of the green, some 45' from the hole, whilst Ainsworth was also past the hole, some 30'. A good approach put to 3' by Currie was confidently holed, after Ainsworth had narrowly failed with his birdie effort, giving Currie a 1 hole victory and a match score of Ardeer 3 - Barassie 2.
The final game on the course was between Andrew Kowalski and Robbie Gemmill. Gemmill forged a 2 hole lead by the turn, which was extended to 3 holes after 11. Kowalski reduced the deficit by winning the 12th, but Gemmill maintained his 2 hole lead through 15. At the 330 yard, par 4, 16th, Gemmill found the burn from the tee, whilst Kowalski missed the fairway to the right. After dropping under penalty, Gemmill played his third shot just through the green, some 50' from the hole, whilst Kowalski's approach pulled up short of the green. Kowalski chipped to 10' in three, but Gemmill then produced the putt of the day, holing from just off the green for an incredible par 4. To Kowalski's credit, he rose to the task, bravely holing his put to stay in the match. Gemmill again found water at the 17th hole, but on this occasion Kowalski was able to win the hole and progress to the final hole, needing to win it to give Ardeer a clear win in the final. At the final hole, Gemmill's approach came to rest pin high, 35' to the right of the hole, whilst Kowalski played one of the best shots of the day, his approach pulling up 4' from the flag. Gemmill's tricky downhill putt was good, stopping some 3' past the hole. Kowalski's birdie putt was good, but struck the hole and spun out, giving Gemmill the opportunity to half the hole and tie the match. Gemmill's effort however pulled up short of the hole, giving Kowalski the hole, a halved game and importantly for his team a clear 3.5 - 2.5 win in the match.
On conclusion of the match, both teams were presented with mementoes by Ayrshire Junior Golf League Chairman, Gordon Cunningham (Largs G.C.).
