WEST OF SCOTLAND INTER COUNTY BOYS LEAGUE - Ayrshire on the brink of title win after victory over Renfrewshire

The Ayrshire boys team are on the brink of winning the Wishart Trophy and West of Scotland Inter County Under 18 League Championship for the first time since 2019, following victory over Renfrewshire in their latest fixture played at Ayr Belleisle on Sunday the 18th of August.

The winning Ayrshire team against Renfrewshire
Liam Moran, Lyle Vogwell, Mason Chisholm, Quintin Dunlop, Jack Broadfoot,
Dylan Scally, Harris Fleming, Aidan Hay

In the lead tie Aidan Hay got Ayrshire off to the best possible start with a 6&5 victory which was soon extended to a 3-0 lead with Laim Moran and Lyle Vogwell adding 4 & 2 wins.

Victory in the match was assured with a 5&4 win for Jack Broadfoot and a 4&3 win by Harris Fleming, while the new Ayrshire Boys Matchplay champion Quintin Dunlop added a further point to the Ayrshire tally with a 3&2 win. Dylan Scally, playing in the anchor tie, won by 3&1 to give Ayrshire their seventh point in the match.

In the remaining tie Mason Chisholm was unlucky to lose on the final green, having matched his opponent Nathan Love for the majority of a very close match before going one behind at the fourteenth and then losing the fifteenth when Nathan holed his second shot with a wood to record that rarest of feats with an albatross two on the par five hole. A great recovery from a bunker at the par three seventeenth by Mason for a winning par gave him the opportunity by extending the tie to the final hole but in the event a good hole by Nathan saw Mason lose out in his bid for a half in the tie.

DUMBARTONSHIRE   4    STIRLINGSHIRE   4

The 7 - 1 win by Ayrshire coupled with the 4-4 draw between Dumbartonshire and Stirlingshire in the other match played on Sunday the 18th, at Clober GC, leaves Ayrshire clear at the top of the table, and only a combination of an 8-0 defeat in their final match at home to Stirlingshire at Irvine on the 1st of September, and a 8-0 win by Renfrewshire in their final fixture at home to Lanarkshire at Renfrew GC the same day, would prevent Ayrshire winning the title and trophy for the first time in five years.
