AYRSHIRE BOYS' MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - Newman and Dunlop through to championship final

The final of the 2024 Ayrshire Boys' Matchplay Championship will be contested at Prestwick Golf Club on Thursday the 8th of August between Scott Newman (West Kilbride) and Quntin Dunlop (Turnberry) following the semi finals played on Wednesday evening, the 7th of August.

In the first semi final, Boys' Strokeplay Champion Scott Newman was up against Oliver Long (Kilmarnock Barassie).

Three up at the turn, Scott had the chance to close out the match on the fourteenth green but missed his birdie putt for a 5&4 victory. The outcome was only postponed for a hole however, with a half at the fifteenth giving Scott a 4&3 win in the match.

In the other semi final Quintin Dunlop faced Aidan Hay (Irvine).

The match was very close throughout with both players producing some excellent play. Aidan held a single hole lead at the turn and remained ahead until Quintin won the fifteenth to square the match.

At the sixteenth Quintin played an excellent second from close up against the sleepers at the front of the Cardinal Bunker but his ten foot birdie putt slipped just past the hole and the match remained all square with two to play.

At the seventeenth Aidan found the back apron of the green in two while Quintin was unfortunate with his approach, which landed just beyond the Sahara bunker but fell back into the sand, from where he played an excellent recovery to within six feet of the hole.

Aidan's attempt  from the rear of the green ran several feet past the hole and when he failed with his par putt, Quintin took full advantage, holing his putt for a winning par four to go to the final hole with a lead.

At the last regulation hole, both players were close to the green with their tee shots but came up short with their approaches. While Aidan secured his par four with two putts, Quintin's first put ran five feet past the hole, and his par putt horseshoed around the hole but failed to drop, resulting in the match going to extra holes.

At the first extra hole Quintin ultimately secured a par four which Aidan couldn't match, and Quintin claimed his place in the final.

The final on Thursday evening, the 8th of August, tees off at 4.30.p.m.
