STEPHEN MACHIN - Golfing community shocked by Glasgow Golf Union President's sudden passing

The golfing community in the West of Scotland and far beyond have been shocked to learn of the tragic sudden passing of Glasgow Golf Union President Stephen Machin on Sunday the 18th of June at the far too young age of 57.

Stephen was an exceptional golfer and more importantly was one of life's true gentlemen whose amiable manner and sense of humour made him life long golfing friends throughout the world.

On the course he had many successes, including victories in both the Glasgow Golf Union county strokeplay and matchplay championships and many club successes at both his golfing 'alma mater' at Cowglen Golf Club and the club he later joined and loved being a member of at Royal Troon. The pinnacle of his achievements at Royal Troon were his two Club Championship victories in 2018 and 2022.

Though Stephen was well respected and widely known for his golfing prowess, he was equally lauded for his commitment to various aspects of the administration of the game also. A Past Captain of the Cowglen club, he also managed both the club team, who succeeded in winning the Brand Putter league last year after a 15 year gap, and also the Glasgow Golf Union county team. His commitment to golf was recognised in October 2022 when he was elected president of The Glasgow Golf Union.

Stephen's very sudden passing has taken from the golfing community one of the real 'good guys' and many throughout Scotland and far beyond who had the pleasure of Stephen's company, and were fortunate enough to consider him a good friend, will feel much sadness and a real feeling of loss at this terribly unexpected news.

The thoughts of all at The Ayrshire Golf Association are with Stephen's immediate family, his wife of  close on 30 years, Liz, children Kelly and Stephen and grand daughter Harper, and the wider circle of family and friends who will bear this sad loss most deeply.

Rest easy Stephen, reunited with wee Liam. It was a real pleasure to have had the good fortune to know you.
