AYRSHIRE STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - Stuart Robin edges out defending champion to take county crown

to 2013 Champion Staurt Robin
Stuart Robin (Prestwick St Nicholas) won the 2013 Ayrshire Strokeplay Championship at a windy Prestwick Golf Club on Sunday 28th April, edging out defending champion David Wilson (Troon Welbeck) by a single shot to become the first St. Nicholas member to win the title since Gavin Lawrie in 1996.

The players had to contend with strong winds veering from south west to north west, and heavy rain showers, throughout the day, but to the credit of the field, there were a number of notable scores returned.

Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) led the field after the morning round, his outstanding  four under par 67 leaving his closest rivals David Wilson (Troon Welbeck) and Ewan McKinnon (Corrie) four behind on level par 71, with three other players, George Robertson (Irvine Ravenspark), John Haggarty (Loudoun)  and the eventual winner Stuart Robin, one further back on 72.

In the afternoon, Robin returned a second successive 72 for a two over par total of 144 whilst the defending champion David Wilson (Troon Welbeck) followed his morning score with a three over par 74 in the afternoon to fall just one shot short and take the runners up place.

Third place went to Craig Hamilton (Ballochmyle) on 147 (73/74).

Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) faded badly in the afternoon, carding a 10 over par 81 for a total of 148 and fourth place overall.

Host club member James Bunch (Prestwick) took fifth place on 150 (78/72), whilst sixth place was shared by Loudoun duo Steven McEwan (77/74) and Tommy McInally (76/75) alongside Ewan McKinnon of Corrie (71/80).

At the conclusion of the competition, prizes were awarded to the successful competitors by Ayrshire Golf Association Vice President James McMurdo (Ballochmyle).

The CSS for the morning round was 75 (+2) and the afternoon round was 76 (+3)
