AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE - Barassie secure last semi final place

Defending champions Kilmarnock (Barassie) secured the last semi final place in the 2011 Ayrshire Junior Golf League championship in a nailbiting finish to their league section this week.

Having beaten their closest rivals Prestwick St Cuthbert by the narrow margin of 3.5 - 2.5 at Barassie earlier in the week, the title holders went to West Kilbride on Thursday evening knowing that they required at least a 3 - 3 draw to go through to the semi finals. Despite their hosts being at the foot of the section, the champions were held to a 3 - 3 draw which was just enough to see them through.

Kilmarnock (Barassie) now join Annanhill, Irvine (Bogside) and Ayr Belleisle in the semi final draw next week.

In the UNDER 16 KNOCKOUT TROPHY, three of the four semi finalists are also known.

Prestwick St Nicholas received a walkover from Caprington whilst Ardeer beat their visitors Irvine ravenspark by 3 - 1 and Ayr Belleisle went through in their home match against Ballochmyle at the second play off hole, after the match was drawn 2 - 2.

Prestwick St Nicholas, Ardeer and Ayr Belleisle now await the winner of the tie between Troon Welbeck and Kilmarnock (Barassie) when the draw is made for the semi finals next week.

Two of the semi final places have been decided in the CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS TROPHY competition.

Euan Walker (Kilmarnock Barassie) was already in the semi finals as a result of receiving a bye and he has been joined there by Alan Wilson (Ballochmyle) who beat Daniel Forbes (Ardeer) by 2 & 1 at Ballochmyle in their quarter final clash.

The other outstanding quarter final matches are :-

Daniel Webster (Prestwick St Cuthbert) Vs. David Wilson (Ayrshire Boys Matchplay Champion)
Ross Hunter (West Kilbride) Vs. Callum Beveridge (Troon Welbeck)

In the WALLACE THORNTON TROPHY competition, 2010 runners up Kilmarnock (Barassie) are off to the perfect start in Section 1, beating Prestwick St Nicholas 4 - 0 at home and Largs 4 - 0 away in their opening two fixtures.

Irvine also opened with a 4 - 0 home win over Prestwick St Nicholas whilst the St Nicholas team recorded their first points of the campaign with a 3 - 1 home win against Largs.

no matches have taken place so far in Section 2.

The winners of each section will progress to the final which will be played in September.

SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - Ayrshire hopes end in last 16

Ayrshire's last remaining player in the 2011 Scottish Amateur Championship, being played at Western Gailes this week, bowed out in the last 16 on Thursday evening.

Scott Brown (Turnberry) faced number two seed and Scotland internationalist James Byrne (Banchory) for a place in the quarter finals but was never ahead in his match as he exited the tournament with a 3 & 1 defeat.

Brown was two down at the turn against byrne but reduced the defecit to one hole with a birdie three at the 12th, only to see the defecit restored to two holes at the thirteenth courtesy of a birdie two from Byrne.

The players matched each other in par over the remaining holes until Brown could only manage a bogey five at the seventeenth hole to give byrne a 3 & 1 win.

SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - Brown is lone Ayrshire hope in last 16

The Ayrshire challenge for the 2011 Scottish anmateur Championship title at Western Gailes this week was decimated in the fourth round on Thursday morning with only Scott Brown (Turnberry) winning throuh to the last 16 out of the seven players Ayrshire had left in the championship

Scott Brown
It was left to Scott Brown to keep the Ayrshire hopes alive and he did so in dramatic fashion, winning through in the longest match of the week at the fifth extra hole against new Scotland Boys cap eamon Bradley (Mount Ellen).

Brown was never behind in his match, forging a two hole lead by the turn and extending the lead to three holes with three to play. His opponent, who was named this week in the Scotland boys team for the forthcoming Home Internationals, took advantage of a pair of bogey fives by Brown to take the match to the final hole before holing a 50 foot putt for a birdie three to take the match into extra holes.

The first four extra holes were halved in pars before Scott Brown's opponent got into trouuble at the fifth extra hole, forcing a concession of the match to the Ayrshire player.

In the last 16, Scott Brown faces number two seed James Byrne (Banchory) on Thursday afternoon for a place in the quarter finals.
