AYRSHIRE MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - McInally wins title in marathon final
Tommy McInally (Loudoun) fought back to take the title against Tommy Loy (Ballochmyle) when play in the 2006 Ayrshire Matchplay Championship final resumed at Troon Portland on Fiday night, following suspension of play after 10 holes the previous evening.
Tommy Loy held a two hole advantage when play was suspended due to lightning on Thursday night, but when the final restarted on Friday evening McInally immediately reduced the defecit by winning the 11th hole.
Tommy Loy restored his two hole advantage at the 13th, and had a putt at the 15th to go dormie three. Loy missed the putt but remained two holes ahead with three to play.
Tommy McInally took full advantage of Loy's failure to take the 15th, and a birdie 2 at 16 followed by a birdie 3 at the 17th secured both holes for McInally and brought the match back to level.
The players then halved the final hole and the match continued into extra holes.
The 19th and 20th holes were halved but when Loy missed the green with his approach at the 21st and failed to get up and down, McInally had only to get down in two from the edge of the green to win the match.
McInally rose to the task, securing his par 4 to win the 2006 Ayrshire Matchplay title at the third extra hole.
